Ethics Statement
Ethical Dog Training Statement
Our Commitment
We are committed to providing ethical, humane, and evidence‑based dog training that prioritises the welfare of dogs and the wellbeing of their humans. Our approach is grounded in kindness, respect, and a clear understanding that every dog is an individual.
This statement outlines the ethical principles that guide all of our training, advice, and professional conduct.
1. Dog Welfare Comes First
-
The physical and emotional welfare of the dog is our highest priority.
-
Training will never knowingly cause pain, fear, intimidation, or distress.
-
We aim to help dogs feel safe, understood, and supported while learning.
-
Sessions are adapted to the dog’s age, health, breed, history, and emotional state.
2. Humane, Force‑Free Methods
-
We use modern, science‑based training methods that focus on positive reinforcement and clear communication.
-
We do not use or recommend aversive techniques or tools, including but not limited to: physical punishment, intimidation, choke chains, prong collars, shock/e‑collars, or any method designed to cause fear or pain.
-
We believe behaviour is communication and seek to understand the why behind a dog’s actions rather than suppressing behaviour through force.
3. Evidence‑Based Practice
-
Our training methods are informed by current behavioural science, learning theory, and continuing professional development.
-
We remain open to new research and best practice and adapt our approach as understanding evolves.
-
We work within the limits of our competence and refer clients to qualified professionals (such as veterinary surgeons or clinical animal behaviourists) when appropriate.
4. Individualised Training
-
There is no “one‑size‑fits‑all” approach to dog training.
-
Training plans are tailored to each dog and household, taking into account lifestyle, environment, goals, and ethical considerations.
-
We respect that progress looks different for every dog and that learning is not linear.
5. Honest and Transparent Communication
-
We aim to be clear, realistic, and honest about what training can and cannot achieve.
-
We do not guarantee specific outcomes, as behaviour is influenced by many factors beyond training alone.
-
Clients will always be informed about the methods being used and the reasoning behind them.
6. Respect for Clients
-
We treat all clients with kindness, patience, and respect, regardless of experience or background.
-
We do not shame, judge, or blame owners for their dog’s behaviour.
-
Training is a partnership, and we aim to empower clients with knowledge and confidence.
7. Safety and Risk Management
-
Safety of dogs, clients, the public, and ourselves is essential.
-
We reserve the right to pause, adapt, or stop a session if safety or welfare is compromised.
-
Clients are expected to disclose relevant behavioural, medical, or legal issues to allow us to work safely and responsibly.
8. Ethical Boundaries
-
We will not support or participate in training that conflicts with this ethical policy.
-
We will decline work where our methods are not a suitable or safe option, or where client expectations are incompatible with humane training.
-
Confidentiality and professional boundaries are respected at all times.
9. Ongoing Professional Responsibility
-
We commit to ongoing education and reflective practice.
-
Feedback is welcomed and used to improve our services.
-
We strive to represent ethical dog training honestly and responsibly within the industry and wider community.
10. Our Ethos
At the heart of our work is the belief that dogs learn best through trust, clarity, and compassion. Ethical training is not just about changing behaviour — it is about improving quality of life, strengthening relationships, and helping dogs and humans thrive together.
This statement reflects our values and professional standards and is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains aligned with current best practice and legislation.
